Initial Career
Shami’s initial career took flight from Sahaspur village in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. Tauseef Ali was his father and he had five children of which Shami was one among them. Tauseef had also played cricket in his younger days as a fast bowler. When his father realised the talent was there. Shami was taken to Moradabad where he trained under the watchful eyes of Badruddin Siddique.
Shami would train regularly at Moradabad and work on all aspects of his bowling. The right-arm pacer would ask for older balls to be given to him. He would use them to perfect the art of reverse swing which would help him immensely in the latter stages of his career.
Shami performed amazingly well at the UP Under-19 trials but he did not make the cut due to politics in selection. Since UP did not work out a decision was made to send Shami to Kolkata where a change in fortunes took place.
Debabrata Das a former Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) secretary was stunned when he saw Shami bowl. Das took Shami under his wing and took him to live with him. Das also made Shami a part of his club. After which Shami made his debut for the Bengal U-22 side.
IPL Debut with Kolkata Knight Riders
Shami was signed up by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2011. Shami was identified as an up-and-coming fast bowler by Dav Whatmore who worked with the CAB to get a pool of fast bowlers at that time. It took two more years as Shami played his first IPL match in 2013.
Shami picked up a wicket in the 2013 season and played three games for KKR. Shami also trained with KKR fast bowling coach Wasim Akram who was a part of the setup then. Akram said that Shami never used to miss training and was always eager to learn. Shami and Akram got close and developed a great bond with each other.
Shami then switched bases to Delhi Capitals (DC) erstwhile Delhi Daredevils from 2013 to 2018. In 2019 the tide turned as Shami picked up close to 20 wickets in three seasons for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) erstwhile Kings XI Punjab. Then in 2022 Shami was snapped up by the Gujarat Titans (GT) and has had two rewarding seasons there where he picked up 20+ wickets in both seasons.
